From Gold Country Wildlife Rescue:

A Rare and Remarkable Visitor

This past week, we welcomed an incredibly rare patient to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue—an albino Black-Tailed Deer fawn, the first we've ever cared for.

Albino deer are extremely uncommon in the wild. Their snowy white appearance is the result of inheriting the albinism gene from both parents, a condition that prevents the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for color in skin, hair, and eyes. This unique trait makes them especially vulnerable in the wild, but also truly striking to see.

Sadly, this fawn was found entangled in a fence and, despite our team’s intensive efforts, it passed away due to its injuries. While loss is a hard reality in wildlife rehabilitation, we were honored to provide this little one with compassionate care, comfort, and dignity during its final days.

Even in loss, there’s an opportunity to learn and reflect. Though rare, albino deer have been spotted in our region over the years—so if you’re out enjoying nature, keep your eyes open. You just might be lucky enough to glimpse one of these beautiful and elusive animals in the wild.
